Ligna Energy partners with Wellinks on custom component for Spire Health Tag

Norrköping, Sweden [10th of September 2026] – Ligna Energy today announces that its S-Power supercapacitor has been selected by Wellinks, a US-based leader in virtual cardiopulmonary monitoring, for integration into the Spire Health Tag following a collaborative product development program.

About the Spire Health Tag

Wellinks delivers a virtual cardiopulmonary care solution by combining clinical support and remote monitoring to support patients from the comfort of their homes. Within the Wellinks care model, the Spire Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) System turns physiologic data collected through the Spire Health Tag into insights that support proactive care. When worn, the Health Tag provides passive, continuous monitoring of respiratory rate, pulse rate, and activity associated with movement. Designed to adhere discreetly to the inside of clothing and remain in place through normal laundering, it requires no daily patient interaction. Data collected from the Health Tag enables timely notification of deviations from a patient’s clinical baseline to support proactive intervention and Wellinks’ broader aim to close care gaps for people living with chronic cardiopulmonary conditions.

Customer driven Product Matching

Meeting the Health Tag’s durability and size requirements while delivering reliable, long-term performance requires a custom energy storage solution. Ligna Energy was chosen not only for its ability to meet these demands in an exceptionally compact, ultra-thin form factor, but for its collaboration and adaptability brought to the development process. The S-Power platform combines an ultra-thin form factor, the most sustainable PFAS-free materials and the scalability required for competitive high-volume production. Wellinks and Ligna teams worked together to tailor the S-Power component specifically to the Spire Health Tag’s requirements, resulting in a custom solution engineered for size, longevity, and reliability in the Health Tag’s intended use conditions. The program is an example of Ligna’s ability to work closely with customers from early design stages through to a finished component, adapting the S-Power platform to meet customer-specific requirements.

“Innovation at this scale depends on getting the smallest details right,” says Jennifer Barretta, Interim CEO and Chief Operating Officer of Wellinks. “Ligna Energy has been a reliable partner in co-developing a custom solution used in our Health Tag that meets form and functional requirements. With this solution in place, Wellinks can scale production, advancing our mission to close gaps in care and expand our reach to traditionally underserved patient populations.”

“The S-Power platform is designed to be adaptable to the specific constraints of each application. Working closely with Wellinks’ engineers, we tailored the cell to fit precisely within the Health Tag’s demanding requirements for size and electrical performance. This included optimizing the cell geometry, adapting the electrical connections for manufacturability, and minimizing leakage current to meet Wellinks’ integration requirements.” says Jakob Backe, CTO at Ligna Energy.

A Milestone for Ligna Energy

The partnership marks Ligna Energy’s first design-in within the medtech sector. Integration of S-Power into the Spire Health Tag demonstrates Ligna Energy’s ability to meet rigorous ISO 13485 quality requirements for medical devices. Supplier approval requires passing an intensive due diligence process covering material safety, manufacturing quality, and long-term reliability, a standard that Ligna met in full, confirming that the S-Power platform meets the requirements of highly regulated markets worldwide.

“This collaboration with Wellinks confirms that our ultra-thin supercapacitor technology has a genuine role to play in next-generation wearable medical devices, where space constraints often rule out conventional energy storage entirely. It is a strong validation of our platform as we continue to grow within the medtech segment,” says David Milton, Sales Director at Ligna Energy.
