Verified EPD shows Ligna Energy’s S-Power supercapacitor has a carbon footprint of only 12 g CO₂e per unit — sustainable, safe, and recyclable
Ligna Energy is proud to announce that our S-Power supercapacitors now come with a third-party verified carbon footprint. The verification was carried out in accordance with international EPD standards (EN 50693 and ISO 14025), based on a full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
Verified climate impact
The verified result covers the full cradle-to-gate lifecycle (raw material extraction, transport, and manufacturing at our site in Norrköping, Sweden). The independent assessment shows that the 1.2F 2.7V S-Power supercapacitor has a cradle-to-gate footprint of only 12 g CO₂e per unit. This makes it one of the lowest-impact energy storage components available for electronics applications. This low impact is achieved through bio-based materials, minimal use of metals, and an ultrathin design optimized for resource efficiency. And we’re not stopping here — ongoing material and process improvements are expected to lower this footprint by a further 30%.
Key results from the EPD
According to the verified life cycle assessment (EN 15804+A2 & ISO 14025):
- Carbon footprint (cradle-to-gate): only 12 g CO₂e per unit
- Recyclability: nearly 80% of materials recovered at end of life
- Recycled content: 6% of inputs are secondary materials
- Non-toxicity: contains no REACH SVHC substances above 0.1%
The LCA and the connected EPD is done by a third party set up with the EPD Author Greenstep Oy, verified by EPD Hub.
Why this matters
Electronics have long relied on toxic and hard-to-recycle components, with batteries and even many supercapacitors containing harmful substances such as PFAS and heavy metals. At the same time, regulations like the EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 and new U.S. EPA rules are raising the bar for safe and sustainable design.
Transparency is key. While many products claim to be “green,” Ligna Energy’s verified CO₂ results provide standardized, reliable data that OEMs and designers can trust. This enables informed design choices and supports the transition from harm reduction to true elimination of unsafe materials.
For our customers, verified climate impact means confidence: confidence in meeting their own sustainability targets, confidence in avoiding greenwashing, and confidence in staying ahead of tightening regulations. By publishing this data, Ligna Energy is not only proving its own commitment — we are also helping raise the standard for transparency in the electronics industry.
